Question. Then you have learned that no ungodly persons—whether they despair of God’s mercy or do not fear His justice, but carelessly live a wicked life—can have true Christian faith, even though they recite its words with their tongues.”

Answer: “So I have indeed learned.

Question. Since there is only one God, tell me why, in the confession of the Christian faith, you recite three: the Father, the Son, and the Holy Ghost.

Answer: Those are not the names of different gods, but of three distinct Persons in the Godhead. For God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Ghost—being three Persons—are one only God, as the holy Scriptures teach us; which we ought to believe readily rather than curiously search into the infinite depth of so secret and hidden a mystery.
